Partner Visa Processing 2026

January 8, 2026

Summary: This article outlines 3 key trends for Partner Visa processing in 2026. We're seeing longer wait times across many visa streams due to growing application volumes, an increase in double-grants for couples who meet eligibility thresholds, and—surprisingly—some lightning-fast visa grants when offshore processing offices have capacity. In this article, we’ll break down each of these trends so you can better understand what to expect. Partner Visa Processing 2026: 3 Trends You Need to Know

If you’re planning to apply for a Partner Visa in 2026, one of the biggest questions on your mind is probably: “How long is it going to take?”

Whether you’re applying for the Subclass 820/801, Subclass 309/100, or the Subclass 300 visa, you will want to know about common trends for Partner Visa processing!

Processing times affect everything, from job offers to wedding dates to emotional well-being while couples wait to be reunited.

Based on what we’re seeing at Port Migration, here are three trends to watch in 2026.

Please note this article refers to the Subclass 820/801, Subclass 309/100, and Subclass 300 visas only.

Key Facts

  • Partner Visa processing times are trending longer in 2026 due to high application volumes.
  • We’re expecting more double grants where applicants meet both temporary and permanent visa criteria.
  • Some couples are receiving surprisingly fast decisions from offshore processing offices with extra capacity.
  • Processing times vary greatly depending on the country, application strength, and queue pressure.
  • Understanding trends can help you set realistic expectations and avoid unnecessary stress.

Key Partner Visa Processing Trends in 2026

Trend 1: Longer Wait Times Across the Board

One of the biggest trends we are seeing coming into 2026 is (unfortunately) longer wait times for Partner Visa processing. The volume of applications has surged in recent years, as global travel resumes, more couples reunite, and awareness grows about eligibility pathways. While the Department of Home Affairs provides indicative processing times (typically 12–24 months), we’re seeing more couples stuck in the 14-16 month range, and in some cases, waiting even longer.

In particular applications are facing extended timelines, especially when lodged from countries where document verification or security checks take additional time. Onshore applications can also experience delays, especially if submitted without strong evidence or clear documentation.

For couples, this can be emotionally and financially draining, and many applicants are left refreshing their ImmiAccount daily, hoping for progress.

Our tip for 2026 applicants: Start early, prepare thoroughly, and don’t underestimate the importance of a well-prepared application. Strong preparation is one of the few things you can control, and it makes a real difference.

Trend 2: Surprise Grants from Offshore Offices with Capacity

While longer processing times are becoming more common overall, we’ve also seen a surprising number of very fast visa grants, especially from certain offshore processing offices that seem to have extra capacity. This is our favourite trend that we hope will continue in 2026.

When offshore Partner Visa Processing teams have extra processing capacity, due to factors like seasonal demand or internal resourcing shifts, applications lodged through those posts can be finalised in a matter of a few months, instead of a year or more.

That means some couples, especially those who submitted well-prepared offshore Partner Visa applications, have received decisions much faster than expected. Of course, this is never guaranteed. But it’s a great surprise when it does happen and a hopeful reminder that efficiency can happen, especially when your evidence is strong and you meet all the eligibility requirements upfront.

Our tip for smooth processing: Make sure your application is front-loaded with strong evidence. Fast grants favour the prepared.

Trend 3: More Double Grants — For Couples Who Qualify

One trend we expect to see in 2026 is an increase in double grants. This happens when both the temporary and permanent Partner Visas are granted at the same time. It’s more common when processing times are longer and couples meet the policy requirements for the double grant of their visa while their application is processing.

Although not guaranteed, we’ve noticed that applicants who meet the double grant eligibility, such as being in a long-term relationship (typically 3+ years), are more likely to receive both visas at once when processing has been significantly delayed. We’ve seen this happen more frequently in past years when application backlogs were high.

This can be a silver lining for some couples. If you're eligible and your application is taking a while, a double grant could mean skipping the temporary visa stage altogether and going straight to permanent residency.

Our tip for a double grant: If you are in a long term married or de facto relationship, make sure your Partner Visa application shows this!

What This Means for You

Every Partner Visa journey is different, and processing times can be unpredictable.

Staying informed and submitting a high-quality, well-prepared application gives you the best chance of success.

Partner Visa Processing 2026 Frequently Asked Questions

What is a double grant and who gets one?

A double grant is when both the temporary and permanent partner visas are granted at the same time. This often happens for couples in long term married or de facto relationships who submit applications with very strong evidence.

Can some Partner Visas be granted faster than expected?

Yes — we’re seeing some faster processing times for applications assessed by some offshore processing teams, but this is unpredictable and not guaranteed.

Why are Partner Visa wait times increasing?

Wait times are increasing mainly due to the high number of applications being submitted and limited processing resources.

How can I increase my chances of a faster decision?
