July 14, 2025

Episode 6 Show Notes

Welcome back to the Port Migration Partner Visa Podcast!

In Episode 6, we take a deep dive into one of the most common (and nerve-wracking) questions couples ask: How long will our Partner Visa take?

We explain the real reasons some Partner Visas are processed quickly while others seem to drag on for years. From missing documents to complex personal situations, we break down what actually slows things down—and what you can do to avoid unnecessary delays.

If you're trying to estimate your own Partner Visa processing time or you're already waiting and wondering why it's taking so long, this episode is a must-listen.

Key Takeaways

  • Partner Visa processing times vary widely depending on the type of application and your unique circumstances.
  • Onshore and offshore visas follow different processing models—and expectations need to be set accordingly.
  • Uploading incomplete documents or failing to respond to Home Affairs requests can significantly delay your visa.
  • Identity checks for children, unresolved court matters, and frequent email changes can also slow the process.
  • Using a Migration Agent ensures your documents are complete, your evidence is strong, and requests from Home Affairs are not missed.
  • Getting expert support early can help you avoid mistakes that add months—or even years—to your wait time.
  • No one can fast-track your visa, but you can avoid the things that make it slow.

🎙️ "There is no such thing as a guaranteed timeline."
🎙️ "Fast processing is never luck—it’s preparation."
🎙️ "Errors, missing evidence, and silence are what cause delays."
🎙️ "You can’t control everything, but you can control how ready you are."

Episode 6 Show Notes

Hello and Welcome to Season 1, Episode 6 of the Port Migration Partner Visa Podcast. If you and your partner are planning to apply for an Australian Partner Visa, this podcast is your roadmap.

If you’re new here, I’m so glad you’ve found us. And if you have already listened to the previous 5 episodes—it’s great you’re here, welcome back.

Today we are talking about Partner Visa processing.

If you’ve got questions about Partner Visa Processing, you’re in the right place.

This is the part of the Partner Visa application process that really tests people’s patience and can cause high levels of anxiety for couples.

Partner Visa wait times are long. After you’ve submitted your Partner Visa application it’s common for couples to wait 12 or 18 months before they hear anything at all from Home Affairs. And receiving a decision can take even longer. It’s not uncommon to read stories of couples waiting 24 or even 36 months.

We publish regular Partner Visa processing updates at the start of each month on our Youtube channel, so if you’re looking for the most up to date information about how long it is taking for Home Affairs to reach a decision about Partner Visas, that’s a great place to find it. Subscribe to the Port Migration Youtube channel and turn on notifications so you don’t miss the processing updates at the start of each month.

But apart from how long it will take, people are often left wondering why it’s taking so long and what they can do to make sure the process is as efficient as possible.

That’s what we’re talking about today. And at the end of the episode we have some great advice from a member of our Partner Visa Facebook Group. So keep listening.

Just a reminder that in this podcast, we talk about the three main types of Partner Visas: The Subclass 820/801 Onshore Partner Visa, The Subclass 309/100 Offshore Partner Visa, And the Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa.

The information in this episode about Partner Visa processing only relates to those visas, and it is based on the decade of experience we have working with couples just like you who have successfully achieved their goal of applying for a Partner Visa.

At Port Migration, we are MARA-registered Australian Migration Agents. You’ll find our registration details in the description, and you can also verify them on the official Migration Agents Registration Authority website (MARA). Always check that the person giving you Australian Visa or Migration advice is legally authorised to do so—your visa is too important to leave in the wrong hands.

Okay, let’s talk about partner Visa Processing.

It’s common to hear questions about Partner wait times. Questions like “How long will it really take?” “Why am I still waiting when my friends got their Partner Visa in 5 months?” “Which visa will be faster?” “I’ve done my health tests, how long will it take now?”

Today we’re talking about Partner Visa Processing – the part of the process that happens after you’ve submitted your application and you’re waiting for Home Affairs to assign your visa to a Case Officer who will make a decision to either grant your visa or refuse it.

If you’re asking yourself these questions — you’re not alone. This is one of the most common worries we hear from couples applying for a Partner Visa. And the truth is, waiting for your visa can be one of the hardest parts of the entire process.

It’s not just the time — it’s the uncertainty. Every day you’re left wondering, When will we hear something? Are we waiting longer than we should be? Is something wrong with our application? And when you see other couples celebrating their visa approvals while you’re still stuck in visa limbo, it’s completely normal to feel frustrated.

But here’s the thing — Partner Visa processing times aren’t one-size-fits-all.

We’ve worked with hundreds of couples over the years, and we know how many factors can influence how quickly, or slowly, a decision is made. Sometimes a fast approval simply isn’t in the cards — and often, there are really logical reasons for that. The good news is, when you understand why the process takes time, it’s much easier to manage your expectations and find some peace of mind during the wait.

When we work with clients we offer a lot of help and support through this waiting process. We’re always here to provide an update or reassurance.

In this episode, we’re going to break it all down. You’ll learn Why some Partner Visas are approved quickly while others take much longer, key factors that impact processing times, things you can do to help avoid unnecessary delays And how to stay calm and confident, even when the wait feels endless.

Because while you can’t control how quickly Home Affairs works, you can control how well your application is prepared — and how you respond to any requests that come your way.

Alright — let’s get into it. Why do some Partner Visas take months and others take years? Let’s find out.

There’s no denying it — waiting for a decision on your Partner Visa can feel unbearable. This isn’t just paperwork. It’s your relationship, your future, your plans — and all of that is now at the mercy of a government process that can take many months, sometimes years.

It’s not just the wait that’s hard. It’s the uncertainty. You can’t plan your next steps with confidence. Maybe you’re postponing career moves or putting off major financial decisions like buying a house. Perhaps you’re missing family events, struggling with long-distance, wondering about schools for the kids, or facing constant questions from loved ones asking, “Any news yet?”

And then there’s the emotional toll. Watching others get their visas approved in half the time can feel unfair and confusing. Why is one couple celebrating approval of a double grant while you’re still refreshing your inbox? It’s completely normal to feel frustrated or powerless.

But the truth is — understanding why the process takes so long can make it a little easier to cope. When you understand the factors that influence visa timelines, it helps you manage expectations, avoid unnecessary delays, and stay focused on what you can control.

If you’ve been following along, you already know that Partner Visas are complex, high-stakes applications. When you apply, you’re not just requesting a visa — you’re applying for Australian permanent residency. That’s a significant commitment for the government, so it makes sense that they’re careful.

The Department of Home Affairs assesses Partner Visas in two stages: first granting the temporary visa (Subclass 820 or 309) and then, after around two years from the initial aplication, the permanent visa paperwork can be submitted (Subclass 801 or 100). But even getting that temporary visa can take anywhere from 12 to 24 months depending on your situation.

Several factors impact how quickly — or slowly — your application moves through the system.

The completeness of your application impacts processing. Missing documents, unclear relationship evidence, or inconsistent information can lead to significant delays. Every time the Department has to request additional information, your application is put on pause. Couples come to us who haven’t uploaded any documents after 12 months of waiting. Or maybe they haven’t responded to requests for additional documents. Of course this will slow the process down.

Your relationship circumstances impact processing. Some applications require more scrutiny than others. If you’ve had previous visa refusals, previous sponsorships, been in a long-distance relationship, or have limited shared financial or household evidence, your case may take longer.

Where you apply from: Onshore and offshore visas can have different timelines, and certain countries experience longer processing times due to local factors like embassy workloads.

The volume of applications can impact processing. Simply put, when more people apply, it takes longer for everyone. Government priorities also shift, meaning certain visa categories may be processed faster depending on policy changes. This is often impacted by national and international events that are outside your control.

Health and character checks can impact processing. Delays in getting your medical exams or police certificates can slow things down. Or if either your health or character checks require further investigation.

While there’s always some variation in processing times, let’s look at some of the kinds of situations we’ve seen that can cause processing times that are significantly longer than normal.

We’ve got three examples for you.

The first example that can cause really long delays is when a couple don’t Provide Requested Information to Home Affairs. This one is more common than you might think. You submit your application, and everything seems fine—until months later, Home Affairs sends a Request for Further Information (RFI). Maybe they need more evidence, or clarification on a form, or a missing document. But instead of replying quickly, people put it off. Or they don’t realise how important it is. Or worse—they don’t reply at all.

What happens next? Processing stalls. The case officer waits for you to respond. And eventually, if no response is provided, they make request the information again or Home Affairs may refuse the application entirely.

We always say: If Home Affairs asks for something, don’t delay. Respond clearly and quickly.

And if you’re not sure what’s being asked—reach out for help. That one decision could save you months. It’s a red flag if you receive repeated requests for something you think you have already submitted.

Another example that can cause longer processing times is when Children’s Identity Documents Don’t Meet Australian Requirements. If there are children included in your Partner Visa application, especially if only one parent is travelling with the children or in cases from countries with different documentation standards, the identity verification process can get complex fast. Australia has very strict requirements for identity documentation, especially for minor children. If there are gaps, inconsistencies, or concerns, it can trigger extra layers of verification—like requests for additional records, or even DNA testing.

And while this might feel confronting or slow, it’s absolutely critical. Child safety is paramount. Verifying the identity and legal guardianship of every child is one of the most important responsibilities Home Affairs has. If additional documents or DNA testing are requested, expect longer processing. But know that it’s part of ensuring children are protected—and the system is doing what it should.

The third example we will give isn’t very common, but it is the cause of some of the cases we have seen with the longest processing times, and that’s Unresolved Legal or Court Issues. This sometimes happens when a visa applicant has an unfinalised court case—even if it’s unrelated to their relationship.

Any pause in processing because of unresolved court cases can stretch your processing time by many, many months.

The Bottom Line is that Every visa application is different—but delays usually happen when there’s uncertainty, missing information, or uncommon complexity.

If you want to avoid the long wait, your best move is to Be organised from the start, Respond promptly to Home Affairs, and Get expert advice if anything feels unclear.

That’s what we’re here for. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Knowing all of this doesn’t necessarily make the wait easier — but it does help to make sense of it. For our clients we can often provide insights into why one application might take longer than another. And of course we use everything we’ve learned over a decade in this job to help our clients experience smooth visa processing. And that sense of clarity? It can be a game-changer for your patience and peace of mind.

While you can’t control how many applications are in the queue or how quickly the Department processes them, there’s a lot you can control. And it starts with submitting a high-quality, complete application.

We see it all the time — applications that drag on because key documents were missing or details were inconsistent. The best thing you can do is get it right the first time.

That means Providing clear, consistent evidence that proves your relationship across all four categories. We covered this in Episode 3, so go back and listen if you missed it.

Double-checking your timeline and documents for any mistakes or gaps that could lead to questions.

Responding promptly if Home Affairs asks for additional information. Slow responses cause unnecessary delays. Honestly I have seen people become unlawful because they didn’t check their email. Check your email people.

And Staying informed about current processing times can help you to manage your expectations. Fluctuations are normal and every application is different.

And finally — and perhaps most importantly — practice patience.

The wait can feel like forever, but trust that you’ve done what you can. Resist the urge to compare your timeline to others. Every relationship is different, and so is every visa application.

One thing we often remind couples is that applying for a Partner Visa is a marathon, not a sprint.

There’s no getting around the fact that it takes time. The wait can feel frustrating, and it’s easy to second-guess your application while constantly refreshing your inbox. But staying patient and prepared is one of the best things you can do.

Recently, a member of our Partner Visa Facebook Group shared some excellent advice for couples going through this process:

“My best advice to everyone is: Take your time with the application and make sure you understand the questions before answering. Try to get all the details right the first time around. Be patient. Don’t apply expecting to be approved right away, no matter how strong your case is. It’s going to take time and it’s a process. Wishing everyone the best! Your time will come!”

It’s simple advice, but it’s so powerful.

Taking your time during the application stage means fewer mistakes, fewer delays, and a smoother process overall. Every incorrect answer, missing document, or inconsistency can increase your wait. And once your application is submitted, patience becomes your greatest asset. Even couples with incredibly strong applications don’t get approved overnight. Partner Visas take time — and that’s okay.

But that doesn’t mean you have to go through it alone.

Having an experienced migration expert on your side can reduce the stress and minimize unnecessary delays. The wait is hard. But you don’t have to go through it alone.

Waiting for your Partner Visa can be one of the hardest parts of the process. But understanding why it takes time, and knowing that delays aren’t always a sign that something’s gone wrong, can really help you manage that wait with confidence.

But here’s the thing — sometimes, delays are a sign that something’s wrong. And in the worst cases, those issues don’t just slow things down — they lead to refusals.

We’ve talked about the Three Es of Partner Visa SuccessEligibility, Evidence, and Errors. You’ve already learned how to check your eligibility and how to build strong, convincing evidence. But now it’s time to talk about the third E — Errors.

And let’s be clear: Errors are the silent killers of Partner Visa applications.

It’s devastating when we see couples who have poured their hearts into an application, only to have it refused because of something that could have been avoided. It might be a simple mistake in the paperwork. It might be a lack of evidence. Or sometimes, it’s a situation that spiralled out of control — like a relationship breakdown or a misunderstanding of visa conditions.

Tens of thousands of people apply for Partner Visas every year — but not all get approved.

In the next episode, we’re going to unpack the most common errors that lead to visa refusals. We’ll share real-life examples, explain what went wrong, and most importantly, teach you how to avoid those same mistakes.

If you’re applying for a Partner Visa, this is one episode you can’t afford to miss.

We’ll see you in Episode 7.

Now that we’ve set the scene, let’s talk about why the Australian Partner Visa process feels so complex—and what you can do about it.

There’s no getting around the fact that the Australian Partner Visa application process is complicated.

The Australian Partner Visa application process is often described as one of the longest, most expensive, and emotionally challenging visa processes in the world. And here’s the thing—most couples don’t expect that. You’re making one of the most exciting, life-changing decisions of your relationship: to build a future together in Australia. You’re thinking about love, commitment, life plans… not necessarily about forms, evidence, paperwork, legislation and bureaucracy.

But that’s exactly where so many couples find themselves—dropped unexpectedly into a system that feels more like a legal process than a love story. And suddenly, you’re faced with layers of government policy, document requirements, strict deadlines, and uncertainty.

When I first became a Registered Migration Agent in 2015, even I was surprised by how complex the process really is. I remember thinking: “Surely, if your partner is Australian, they should be able to get a visa?” But I quickly learned—having an Australian partner doesn’t automatically grant you the right to stay in Australia. There are hoops to jump through, and they can feel endless if you don’t know what you’re doing.

There are a few reasons why it is like this.

First, it’s a high-demand visa. Around 60,000 couples apply for a Partner Visa every year. That’s a huge number, and with that volume of applications comes longer processing times and more rigorous checks.

Second, it’s a high-stakes application. When you apply for a Partner Visa, you’re essentially applying for Australian Permanent Residency. And with Permanent Residency comes access to Medicare, social services, work rights—and eventually, the ability to apply for Australian Citizenship when you meet the requirements. It makes sense that the government takes these applications seriously.

Third, the system is designed to protect. Whenever you’re moving people across borders, especially in intimate partner relationships and possibly including children, there’s a risk of exploitation. That’s why the process includes strict safeguards to protect vulnerable potentially adults and children. It’s not about making things difficult—it’s about making things safe. And safety takes time.

And finally, many delays and complications happen because of applicant error. The system is complicated, yes—but it’s often made harder by mistakes, missing documents, incorrect assumptions, or poor-quality evidence.

So lets have a look at how to be successful.

If the system is complex, it’s important to understand what you actually need to focus on to navigate it successfully.

That’s where our framework comes in. After working with LOTS of couples over many years, we’ve narrowed it down to what we call The Three Es of Partner Visa Success:

Eligibility
Evidence
Errors

These are the three factors that make or break a Partner Visa application.

Let’s break them down.

Eligibility is where everything starts. If you’re not eligible, nothing else matters. And yet, this is often the step people rush through—or worse, skip entirely.

It’s not enough to be in a loving relationship. You have to meet specific legal and immigration requirements to even apply. The visa application fee is high, and it’s rising every year. So before you invest your time, energy, and money, you need to know if you’re eligible. Eligibility is everything.

We’ll go deeper into eligibility in just a moment—but first, let’s briefly touch on the other two Es.

Evidence is essential. Unfortunately telling Home Affairs that you’re in a genuine relationship isn’t enough. You have to prove it. And that means providing strong, clear, and well-organised evidence that meets very specific requirements.

If you’re thinking, “We’ve got nothing to hide—we’re a real couple!”—you’re not alone. But even genuine couples can be refused if their evidence is weak or incomplete or doesn’t tick the boxes that the immigration decision maker is looking for. In future episodes, we’ll take a detailed look at what kinds of evidence you need and how to prepare it. Evidence is essential.

Finally, we have errors. Errors are the silent killers of Partner Visa applications. We see them all the time—people uploading the wrong documents, misunderstanding timelines, or failing to meet critical requirements. And sadly, these mistakes can lead to long delays… or even refusal. Let’s face it. Errors can be awful.

The good news? Most errors are completely avoidable—if you know what to look out for. And we’ll be talking about those in a future episode, too.

It’s so important to understand how to succeed in the Partner Visa process.

Here’s what it comes down to:
You can’t control the number of applications Home Affairs receives.
You can’t control the complexity of the system or the fact that it’s rigorous—and rightly so.
But you can control the quality of the application you submit.
And that’s what we focus on here.

It all starts with Eligibility—so let’s dive into what that really means.

As part of understanding eligibility, it’s important to get your head around the three main types of Partner Visas available—and how the process actually works.

The first thing to know is that most Australian Partner Visas are granted in two stages. The first stage is the temporary visa, which gives you full work rights, access to Medicare, and the ability to live in Australia with your partner. The second stage is the permanent visa, which is usually granted two years after the temporary visa, once you’ve shown that your relationship is ongoing.

That two-stage process applies to both onshore and offshore Partner Visas, and it’s a core part of the system.

Now, let’s break down the three main visa subclasses you’ll hear about:

The Subclass 820/801 Partner Visa is the onshore visa. This is for people who are already in Australia on another visa—like a visitor visa, student visa, or working visa—and who want to apply for their Partner Visa without leaving the country. If you meet the eligibility requirements and apply while onshore, you’ll usually be granted a Bridging Visa that allows you to stay in Australia lawfully while your application is being processed. You’ll be granted the 820 temporary visa first, followed by the 801 permanent visa later on.

The Subclass 309/100 Partner Visa is the offshore option. It’s designed for couples who are applying while the visa applicant is outside Australia. With this pathway, the applicant must be offshore when they submit the application and when the temporary 309 visa is granted. Once granted, they can enter Australia and begin their life together here. The permanent 100 visa is applied for later, usually two years after the initial application.

Then there’s the Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa. This is for couples who are engaged but not yet married. It’s a temporary visa that allows the applicant to come to Australia to get married within a set timeframe. Once the marriage has taken place, the couple can then apply for the onshore 820/801 Partner Visa pathway. This option is often used when the couple hasn’t lived together long enough to meet the de facto requirements, or when they plan to marry in Australia.

Choosing the right visa depends on your relationship history, your future plans, and where you and your partner are located when you apply. And as always, making sure you’re eligible—for the visa type, for the two-stage process, and for the relationship requirements—is the most important place to start.

Eligibility is the First (and Most Important) Step. Eligibility is everything

Not every couple is eligible to apply for a Partner Visa. We sometimes meet couples who learn this after they have submitted their application and paid their application fee. And if you’re not eligible, there are situations where no amount of evidence or explanation can save the application.

So let’s go through the basics.

You're generally eligible to apply for an Australian Partner Visa if:
You are married or in a de facto relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
You need to meet the health and character requirements—meaning no significant health conditions or serious criminal history.
You are lawfully in Australia or applying from overseas, and meet the basic criteria for the visa subclass you’re applying for.

The Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage visa is for couples who have met in real life, are legally allowed to marry in Australia, and are applying for a visa so they can marry in Australia and apply for the Subclass 820/801 Partner Visa.

If that sounds like you, great—you’re in the right place.

But please note that there are some things which we specifically do not cover in this podcast series.

There are a range of circumstances which can impact eligibility or the requirements for your application that we do not talk about in this podcast series.

These include but are not limited to:
Situations where couples don’t meet the marriage or de facto relationship requirements for complex reasons.
If you’re in Australia and you’re unlawful.
If you’re in Australia and you’re Section 48 barred.
If you’re subject to a re-entry ban.
If you are onshore with a No Further Stay (8503) condition on your current visa.

If you or your partner have previous sponsorships.
Or if you have health concerns or if you or your partner have character concerns.
We also do not cover requirements for the inclusion of dependent children in this podcast series.
