Episode 8 Show Notes
Hello and Welcome to Season 1, Episode 8 of the Port Migration Partner Visa Podcast. If you and your partner are planning to apply for an Australian Partner Visa, this podcast is your roadmap.
If you’re new here, I’m so glad you’ve found us. And if you have already listened to the other episodes in this season—welcome back.
Today we’re going to talk about what I would do if I was in your shoes.
Mt name is Jo, I am the founder and owner of Port Migration and I’ve helped LOTS of couples successfully apply for Australian Partner Visa — but if I had to apply for a partner visa, here’s how I’d make sure I got it right.
Applying for a Partner Visa is a big deal. It’s not just paperwork — it’s your future. Your relationship. Your plans to build a life together. And when something so important is on the line, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Where do you even start? How do you know if you’re doing it right? And what if a single mistake sets you back months — or worse, results in a refusal?
I’ve been a Migration Agency owner for 10 years, and in that time, I’ve helped countless couples successfully apply for Australian Partner Visas. I’ve also seen where things can go wrong. The unnecessary stress, the sleepless nights, the constant second-guessing — it doesn’t have to be that way.
But sometimes I think, what would I do if I had to apply for a Partner Visa myself?
Not for Australia, of course — I have qualifications in Migration Law and I know the Australian system inside out. But if I were applying for a visa in another country? A country whose laws and processes I didn’t understand? If I didn’t have the qualifications, experience, or insider knowledge I do for Australia?
What would I do to make sure I got it right?
In this episode, I’m going to walk you through exactly that. You’ll hear how I would approach it step by step — from getting clear on my eligibility to making sure my evidence was strong and decision-ready. I’ll also share the biggest mistakes I’ve seen couples make, and how I would avoid them if I were in your shoes.
We’ll cover Why second-guessing yourself is a waste of time, Why endlessly scrolling for advice online can do more harm than good, And how to avoid the kinds of mistakes that lead to costly delays or refusals.
But most importantly, I’ll share what I would do instead:
I’d Get expert advice. If I were applying in another country, I wouldn’t rely on forums or online groups — I’d go straight to someone who was qualified to help. Someone who understands the law, knows how to present a strong application, and can help me avoid the pitfalls that others miss.
I’d Get clear on eligibility. No guessing, no assumptions — I’d make sure I knew exactly whether I qualified before submitting anything.
I’d Know what evidence is needed. Strong applications are clear and well-organized. I wouldn’t waste time submitting irrelevant documents or risk a refusal because something important was missing.
And I’d Avoid the common mistakes. From inconsistent dates to weak relationship evidence, I’ve seen how small missteps can cause major problems. I’d be meticulous — because I know how much is at stake.
And look, if you’re already feeling that stress — that fear of getting it wrong — you don’t have to do this alone.
At Port Migration, we’ve spent a decade helping couples build strong, successful applications. We’ve navigated every kind of scenario, and we know how to guide you through it. You’re not just a number to us — we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Just a reminder that in this podcast, we talk about the three main types of Partner Visas: The Subclass 820/801 Onshore Partner Visa, The Subclass 309/100 Offshore Partner Visa And the Subclass 300 Prospective Marriage Visa.

So, let’s get into it.
If I had to apply for a Partner Visa alone — with no insider knowledge — here’s exactly how I’d make sure I got it right.
Why is it So Hard to apply for a Partner Visa?
Applying for a Partner Visa is hard for one main reason — you’ve never done it before.
And unlike a lot of everyday tasks where trial and error is harmless, getting a Partner Visa wrong comes with serious consequences. A mistake can mean months of delays, added stress, or even a visa refusal. And when your future with your partner is at stake, that’s not something anyone wants to risk.
That’s why this process feels overwhelming. You’re navigating a system you’ve never encountered, with legal terms and government policies that aren’t easy to interpret. Even people who consider themselves pretty organised find this process confusing. You’re left second-guessing every form, every document, and every decision.
And then there’s the emotional toll. You’re not just applying for a visa — you’re fighting for your future together. It’s completely normal to feel anxious, especially when so much is out of your control.
But here’s the thing — it doesn’t have to be that way.
After 10 years as a migration agent, I’ve helped hundreds of couples apply for Partner Visas. I’ve also seen plenty of mistakes — strategies that used to work but no longer do, and new approaches most people don’t even know about.
But sometimes I think: What would I do if I had to apply for a Partner Visa myself?
Not for Australia — I know this system inside out. But if I had to apply in a different country where I wasn’t an expert, what would I do to ensure success?
And just as importantly, what would I avoid?
Let’s talk about What I Wouldn’t Do
If I were applying for a Partner Visa somewhere unfamiliar, there are four big mistakes I’d steer clear of:
I wouldn’t waste time second-guessing every form or document.
Partner Visa applications are about far more than just ticking boxes. Every answer and piece of evidence needs to align with the legal requirements. Guessing your way through or thinking “close enough” is good enough? That’s a recipe for delays or rejection.
I wouldn’t spend months scrolling online forums and comment threads for advice.
I see it all the time — people desperately searching for reassurance by reading the experiences of strangers. But what worked for one couple may not work for another. Their circumstances are not the same as yours. Immigration laws change, processing times fluctuate, and every case is different. Following someone’s outdated advice could lead to serious mistakes.
I wouldn’t follow advice from someone who’s only done it once.
Just because someone successfully applied for a visa doesn’t make them an expert. Would you take cooking advice from someone who has only baked one cake? Probably not. Partner Visas are complex. You need guidance from someone who understands the system — not just someone whose only done it once.
I wouldn’t assume I knew everything.
What you find online is just the tip of the iceberg. What you can’t see are the policies, case officer discretion, and hidden complexities that migration agents spend years studying. The biggest mistakes often happen because people think they understand the whole process when they’re only seeing the surface.
Here's What I Would Do Instead
If I were applying for a partner visa in a country where I wasn’t a migration expert and didn’t have migration law qualifications, registration and experience, here’s how I’d approach it:
I’d Get Expert Advice from a Real Migration Agent
First things first — I’d find someone who knows the system inside out. Visa laws change all the time, and what worked yesterday might not work today. A migration agent understands the nuances of the law, knows what decision-makers are looking for, and can spot issues before they become problems.
I’d Get Clear on Eligibility
Before even starting an application, I’d want to know one thing — do I qualify? Misunderstanding eligibility is one of the most common reasons for refusal. A migration agent can give you an honest assessment, so you’re not wasting time or money on an application that won’t succeed.
I’d find out Exactly What Evidence Is Needed
Not all evidence is created equal. Some documents will make a stronger impact than others, and how you present your evidence matters. A well-prepared, decision-ready application stands out. I’d follow a clear strategy, ensuring that every piece of evidence supports my case.
I’d Avoid Common Visa Mistakes
Even genuine couples get refused if their evidence is inconsistent or incomplete. And the most heartbreaking part? Many refusals are preventable. I’d take every precaution to avoid those mistakes. From accurate timelines to clear statements, I’d make sure everything aligned.
And here’s the thing. You Can Do the Same.
If you’re applying for a Partner Visa for Australia, the good news is — you don’t have to do it alone.
What I’ve shared with you today is how I’d approach this process without my industry knowledge. But you don’t have to guess your way through it. At Port Migration, we do this every single day.
We’ve spent years refining our Simple Partner Visa System — a step-by-step process designed to make sure no detail gets missed. We know exactly what Home Affairs is looking for, and we build applications that meet those expectations.
